Answers to Your
We understand you may have many questions about hospice care. Here you'll find answers to the most common questions we receive from families.
Hospice care is a specialized type of healthcare for patients facing a life-limiting illness. Instead of focusing on curing disease, hospice emphasizes comfort, quality of life, and dignity. Our interdisciplinary team provides comprehensive support including pain management, symptom control, emotional support, and spiritual care for both patients and their families.
Absolutely not. Hospice is not about giving up—it's about redirecting hope toward comfort, quality of life, and meaningful time with loved ones. Many patients actually live longer and more comfortably on hospice because they receive expert symptom management and comprehensive support. Hospice allows families to focus on what matters most during this important time.
Hospice care is provided wherever you call home. This can include your private residence, an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or a hospital. Our team travels to you, bringing all necessary equipment, supplies, and medications. The goal is to allow you to remain in a familiar, comfortable environment surrounded by loved ones.
While both focus on comfort and quality of life, palliative care can be provided at any stage of illness alongside curative treatments. Hospice care is specifically for patients whose physicians have determined they have a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Hospice patients have typically decided to focus on comfort rather than curative treatments.
Patients are generally eligible for hospice care when a physician certifies that they have a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease runs its normal course. Common diagnoses include advanced cancer, heart disease, lung disease, Alzheimer's/dementia, stroke, and other terminal conditions. Our team can help evaluate eligibility.
Getting started is simple. You can contact us directly by phone at (520) 207-1611 or through our contact form. A member of our team will discuss your needs, answer questions, and if appropriate, schedule an evaluation visit. We can typically begin services within 24-48 hours of the initial assessment.
Yes. If a patient's condition improves or they decide to pursue curative treatment, they can revoke hospice care at any time. Some patients do graduate from hospice because their condition stabilizes or improves. If needed later, patients can return to hospice care.
Many patients do live longer than initially expected—this is actually a positive outcome! Hospice care can continue as long as the patient meets eligibility requirements. The care team will conduct regular assessments and recertify as needed. There is no maximum time limit for hospice care.
For most patients, hospice care is fully covered with minimal to no out-of-pocket expenses. Medicare covers 100% of hospice services, including medications, equipment, and supplies related to the terminal diagnosis. Medicaid provides similar coverage. Most private insurance plans also include hospice benefits. We will verify your coverage and explain any costs before services begin.
Hospice coverage typically includes: physician services, nursing care, medical equipment (hospital beds, wheelchairs, oxygen), medications related to the hospice diagnosis, medical supplies, home health aide services, social work support, spiritual counseling, bereavement support for families, and 24/7 on-call nursing support.
We believe everyone deserves compassionate end-of-life care regardless of their ability to pay. If you don't have insurance, please contact us to discuss available options. We may be able to help connect you with resources or discuss alternative payment arrangements.
Visit frequency depends on the patient's needs and can change as conditions change. Typically, a registered nurse visits at least once a week, with additional visits from aides, social workers, and chaplains as needed. During times of crisis or when symptoms need closer management, visits increase. Our team is available 24/7 by phone for urgent needs.
Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an urgent need, you can call our on-call nurse at any time for guidance and support. In most cases, our nurse can help manage situations over the phone or will arrange a visit. For true medical emergencies, you should still call 911.
Yes. Family support is a core part of hospice care. Our social workers and chaplains provide emotional and spiritual support throughout the journey. We also offer caregiver education, respite care to give family caregivers a break, and bereavement support that continues for 13 months after a patient's passing.
Absolutely. Your attending physician can remain involved in your care and work closely with our hospice medical director. Many patients appreciate maintaining their relationship with their longtime doctor while also benefiting from our specialized hospice team's expertise.
Our compassionate team is here to help you understand hospice care and how we can support your family. Don't hesitate to reach out—no question is too small.
